Tunnel Segment Measurement System (TSMS)

This Tunnel Segment Measurement System, or TSMS, was supplied to Dutch contractor Strukton. It is designed to facilitate installation of tunnel sections with very high accuracy, and has found its first application in the Busan-Geoje tunnel, which traverses the 50 metre deep bay of Busan in South Korea.

During the approach phase, the TSMS measures the distance between tunnel sections using an underwater taut-wire system. The final joining together of the sections requires an accuracy that exceeds the capability of any taut-wire, so Seatools provided additional distance sensors. Both the taut-wire and the distance sensors are designed for rapid and easy installation by divers and once the sections have been joined together, the equipment is transported back to the surface through the interior of the tunnel. Seatools supplied a complete system, from the underwater measurement equipment up to the control station at the surface. After delivery ex works, Seatools engineers were present during the first two operations, assisting the client as well as training the operational crew.
